The Virginia men’s basketball team won’t release its full 2013-14 schedule for a couple months, but already there are indications that the non-conference portion of it could be more challenging than last season’s.
Sources have confirmed to The Daily Progress that UVa has added a game with Davidson to its slate. The teams will play on Nov. 16 at the Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte.
Davidson, which is planning on moving from the Southern Conference to the A-10 after this season, finished 26-8 in 2012-13 before a second-round loss to Marquette in the NCAA Tournament.
Earlier this week, the Daily News-Record in Harrisonburg reported that Virginia will host James Madison at John Paul Jones Arena on Nov. 8.
JMU was 21-15 (11-7 in the Colonial Athletic Association) before a second-round loss to Indiana in the Big Dance.
Virginia was hurt by its strength of schedule last season — not making it to the Preseason NIT final four in New York was an absolute killer — and losses to three CAA opponents.
The Wahoos finished with an RPI of 74.
The Cavaliers’ 2013-14 schedule is also expected to include games with Wisconsin, Tennessee and VCU, plus games in the Corpus Christi Challenge over Thanksgiving in a field that includes, among others, Texas A&M and SMU.
Of the aforementioned opponents, VCU finished with the highest RPI last season (24). The Rams were followed by Wisconsin (31), Tennessee (58), Davidson (62), Texas A&M (99) JMU (185) and SMU (218).
