Parkway needs your photo
Friends of the Blue Ridge Parkway is accepting online entries for its third photo contest.
Entries will be accepted until Oct. 31.
The categories include flora (including landscapes), fauna (animals), friends and family. The competition is open to amateurs, including a youth category for ages 6 to 15.
All photographs must be taken within the boundaries of the Blue Ridge Parkway, and each photographer may submit no more than three photos for consideration.
To register a photo for the contest, visit the Friends Web site, and click on the “Entry Form” on the 2008 Photo Contest page. Contest rules are posted on the site.
Winners will be notified by Dec. 1.
Winning entries will be published in the newsletter High Vistas and monthly eNewsletters. All entries also will be published on the Friends Web site.
Last year 353 photographs were entered, and three adult and three student photographers were recognized.

Rothwell teaches in Carolina
Local potter Nan Rothwell has been selected to teach a session at the John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, N.C., on Oct.12-18.
The course, “Pots That Work,” will focus on wheel-thrown functional pottery.
Participants will create of variety of forms, concentrating on their function — pitchers that pour well, mugs that fit the hand, pots that invite touching.
It is geared for all levels, ranging from beginners working on the basics of wheel work to advanced potters working on altering thrown forms.

Tuition due for Handell class
The Academy of Fine Arts in Lynchburg will host a weeklong painting workshop with Albert Handell.
The master artist will give an “On Location Landscape Painting Workshop” from Sept. 29 to Oct. 3.
The workshop is geared toward all level students who have experience working in pastels, oils or water media.
Handell co-teaches with his wife, artist Anita Louise West.
The cost of a one-week workshop is $575.
Tuition is due by Tuesday.
