No foolin’, it’s already time
for April’s opening receptions
l CCDC GALLERY:
In celebration of Architecture Week, the gallery will showcase the “RE:Design Matters” exhibit, which has been held over for April. The show examines the principles of sustainability incorporated throughout the design and renovation process. CCDC’s new space is at 100 Fifth St. NE. There will be a reception from 5 to 8 tonight. 984-2232.
Other events on tap for Architecture Week include Crozet Green Building Tour 10 a.m. Saturday; AIA Kids Day from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday; a film series starting at noon Monday, Tuesday and April 11; and a GreenMatters Workshop on Wednesday.
l LES YEUX DU MONDE:
Genevieve McConnell’s “Silent Dialogues” will be on display in the upstairs gallery.
Also a biophysicist and osteopath, McConnell paints vast sparse landscapes. Her exhibition will consist of new oil paintings, bronze sculpture and silver jewelry. She has exhibited her work in major galleries in France, Canada and New York.
Rob Tarbell’s “No Mirrors,” a show of his recent smoke on paper works, will be in the downstairs gallery. Tarbell, who teaches at Virginia Commonwealth University and Piedmont Virginia Community College, has exhibited in China and South Korea, and throughout the United States.

l BOZART GALLERY:
Matalie Griffin Rivard Deane of Charlottesville invited two artists to exhibit their works with her in “Celtic Patterns Around the World.” Bob Deane of Charlottesville is showing sculpted miniature Celtic armies and Welsh artist Jim Watkins has jewelry in Celtic designs. Opening reception is from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday. 296-3919.
l LA GALERIA:
Sixth annual Spring Art Fling and reception is from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday. The Fling features all of the gallery artists, including Peter Almonte, Mary Porter, Matalie Deane, Chris Rich, Zainab Haider and Ucky Light. Gallery owner Gwen Hoyle will displaying mixed-media spring scenes. 293-7003.
l PARAMOUNT THEATER:
Solo exhibit of oil paintings by local artist Katelyn Sack ranges from mixed-media and oils-only caricatures and portraits, to impressionist studies of flowers, visual representations of music and poem-paintings. The show opens with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday. 979-1333.
l THE BRIDGE:
The work of St. Louis-based painter Steve Kelly explores the collision between the natural world and the human world.
Kelly received his BFA in painting from the University of Montana. An opening reception will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday. 984-5669.
l ARTISANS CENTER OF VIRGINIA:
Charlottesville artist Rebecca Wostrel is the featured artist at the Waynesboro gallery this month. She works exclusively in porcelain. Light refreshments will be served during the reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday. (540) 946-3294.
l MCGUFFEY ART CENTER:
“Along the Garden Path,” botanical imagery by John Grant and pottery by Nan Rothwell, is featured in the main gallery. “Farm Happenings,” new paintings by Nancy Bass, will be in the downstairs hall galleries along with Kathy Craig’s “Recent Work.” The annual High School Show will remain on view upstairs. l THE GALLERY AT FIFTH AND WATER:
Recent paintings by Allie Kelly and Tom Kelly will be featured through April 29. The opening reception is from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Friday. Call 979-9825.
l C’VILLE ARTS:
“Reflections of Nature,” botanical art by Haley J, features flowers and plant material arranged on a watercolor background. A reception will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday. 972-9500.
l FELLINI’S NO. 9:
Multi-medium works of Candice Holleran will be on display throughout April. The artist’s reception is from 5:30 to 7 Friday. 531-9672.
l MIGRATION: A GALLERY:
New exhibit features the work of three leading glass artists from Washington,Tim Tate, Michael Janis and Erwin Timmers. All three are directors of the Washington Glass School.
Tate, whose work is featured in the Smithsonian, incorporates video into his blown glass sculptures. Janis draws with glass powder. Timmers works with recycled glass and neon.
Reception will be from 5:30 to 8 tonight. 293-2200.
l IX BUILDING:
International students at the Adult Learning Center crafted squared to evoke visions of their native countries. Photographs of the project and last year’s quilt will be on display in the “Celebration of Diversity” quilt exhibition. A reception is planned from 5 to 6:30 tonight.
The squares will be joined in the Beauty of Diversity Quilt, which will be shown at the fifth annual Festival of Cultures on May 10 in Lee Park. 245-2817.
l THE BARN SWALLOW:
“The Bloom Show,” a special show of handcrafted items celebrating spring, will be in the middle gallery. It features a collaboration of local artists Mary Ann Burk, Janice Arone, Lotta Helleberg, Leslie Chisholm, Moss Dix, John Grant, Leslie Bantaa and Joan Kinney. An opening reception will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday. 979-4884.
l BISTRO CASSIS:
Monty Montgomery has moved back to town and jumps back in the local art scene with “Surfaced,” a display of acrylics on canvas. There will be an opening reception from 6 to 10 tonight.
A closing party with a DJ also is booked for 9 p.m. April 25. 979-0188.
