It’s time to party ’til closing time
There will be a closing party at 9 tonight for Monty Montgomery’s exhibition at Bistro Cassis.
A D.J. will be on hand for this evening’s event.
Fresh from a show in Knoxville, Tenn., Montgomery has been showing some of his new acrylics on canvas at the local show.

Christen lectures at Kluge, UVa
Kimberly Christen, assistant professor in comparative ethnic atudies at Washington State University, will give a lecture at Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection.
In “A Safe Keeping Place: Shifting Museum Spaces and Embedded Aboriginal Cultural Protocols,” Christen will discuss discuss her work in developing protocols to protect sacred and sensitive information while creating a community digital archive in collaboration with the Warumungu community in Tennant Creek, Northern territories.
The archive, called Mukurtu, contains thousands of photographs, recordings and other historical documents from this community in central Australia. A demonstration of the Mukurtu archive can be seen at www. mukurtuarchive.org.

Christen also will speak at the Scholar’s Lab in the Alderman Library at UVa at 3:30 p.m. Her talk, “Culture at the Interface: Digital Archives and “Social” Rights Management in Aboriginal Australia,” will address the technical aspects of building the archive.

Take a guided tour of ‘Virtuosity’
Kluge-Ruhe Collection will offer a guided tour 10:30 a.m. Saturday of the exhibit “Virtuosity: The Evolution of Painting at Papunya Tula.”
Will Owen, is the author of the blog “Aboriginal Art and Culture – An American Eye.” Owen’s blog is a resource for information on Australian Aboriginal art, including reviews of exhibits, music and publications, reports on breaking news in Australia, and commentary on government policies affecting Indigenous Australians.
No reservations are required for the tour.

Glass artists gets to show their hot works
The Virginia Hot Glass Festival will be this weekend at Sunspots in Staunton.
Many of the region’s hot glass and bead artists will gather at Sunspots Studios for the sixth annual event from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.
Demonstrations of various hot glass techniques, including traditional glass blowing and bead making, will be featured in the hot glass studios. Each glass artist will display and sell their work during the festival.
Sunspots also will be hosting a Pandora jewelry trunk show.
Sunspots is in the Klotz Building at 202 S. Lewis St.

Spring Fling returns to Fluvanna
The Fluvanna Art Association’s annual Spring Fling, a one-day art show, will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday in the Maple Room of the Lake Monticello firehouse.
Member’s works will be on display including original pieces, reproductions and giclee prints. Framed and unframed work will be displayed along with scrapbooks from past years.
Refreshments will be served.
There will be a free raffle of a giclee print by Pete Almonte.

Embree’s work makes a ‘Presence’
Margaret Embree has had her painting “Carter Mountain House II” accepted in Painting as Presence.
Juror William Bailey selected 83 pieces from 383 artists from all over the country. More than 1,100 entries were submitted for the national exhibition will run May 9 through June 27 at Creative Arts Workshop in New Haven, Conn.
Gallery hours are 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday.

C&O opens new show on Thursday
The C&O Gallery will have an opening reception on Thursday evening.
A colorful spring show of pastel paintings by Nancy Gallow will open with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday and remain on view through May. The exhibit focus on Gallow’s homegrown poppies, some sunflowers and scenes from the Rivanna reservoir. The gallery is at 515 E. Water St. For more details, call 973-2150.

Saturday is finale of judges’ show
“Reflecting Women’s Wellness 2008,” a juried art exhibition featuring 42 works in varied media by women or about women or girls, is on display in Richmond. The show can be seen at the Atrium of the James Center through Saturday.
The exhibit, judged by three Charlottesville women, is being presented by Women’s Heath Virginia, as part of April’s celebration of Women and Girls’ Wellness Month in Virginia.
The pieces, by 30 Virginia artists, include works in watercolor, collage, oil, block print, pastel, photography and mixed media. They were selected by jurors Andrea Douglas, curator of collections and exhibits at the University of Virginia Art Museum; Laura Jones, owner of Migration: A Gallery; and Beryl Solla, chair of the art department at Piedmont Virginia Community College.
