Play On’s ‘Guys and Dolls’ is a sure bet for fans of musicals

Play On! — A New Virginia Theatre will bring the musical “Guys and Dolls’’ to its Theatre at Ix stage starting 8 p.m. Thursday.
Gangsters, gamblers, nightclub dancers and missionaries are among the characters in Frank Loesser’s Tony Award-winning Broadway show about bustling New York City in the 1940s.
Clinton Johnston directs a cast that includes Heather Waters as Sarah Brown, Allen Van Houzen as Sky Masterson, Mark Gruber as Nathan Detroit and Jane Scatena as Miss Adelaide.
Also performing in the musical are Francis Deane, Cameron Brasted, Allen Robinson, Elaine Brown, Judy Bazin, Ray Smith, Kerry Moran, Tom Graham, Tina McArthur, Katy Walker, Jessica Wilbert, Andrew Willis, Glenn Harris, Maya Cichon, Kathy Beall, Charles Brooks and Mark Washington.
Greg Harris is musical director and Joncey Boggs is choreographer.
Together, they’ll tell the story of two couples at different stages in life and love.
One unlikely pair includes Sky, a gambler who’ll bet on just about anything, and Sarah, the missionary bent on reforming people just like him.
Detroit is a gambler whose fiancee of 14 years, Miss Adelaide the nightclub singer and dancer, wonders if they’ll ever tie the knot.
The musical’s songs include “Luck Be a Lady,’’ “Sit Down, You’re Rockin’ the Boat’’ and “A Bushel and a Peck.’’
Performances will run through May 24, and there’s a matinee show at 2 p.m. May 11. No seat is more than 32 feet from the stage in the Theatre at Ix.
