A Charlottesville rapper has been nominated for “best Southern rapper” honors at the Urban Threshold Underground Music Awards.
Russell Young, also known as “Boogie,’’ started rapping as a hobby during his freshman year at Pfeiffer University in Misenheimer, N.C. He began taking his craft more seriously after winning first place in a National Urban Talent Showcase in Los Angeles.
The awards will be presented Sunday at the B.B. King Theatre in Times Square in New York City. The event honoring unsigned artists will be shown on MTV.
Young moved back to Charlottesville in 2006, where he and his friend and manager Otis Lewis formed Fam 1st Music Group LLC and started work on his new album. “Russell Young I Am’’ is slated for release in early 2009.
He soon will release a mixtape, “Get Rich Now, Die Later,’’ hosted by Hitman D.J. and DJ Swurv. The mixtape will feature his new single, “Without U.’’ Learn more at myspace.com/ russellyoungmusic.
