Zephyrus will explore the German composers whose works J.S. Bach would have heard while he was growing up.
The vocal group, which specializes in music of the medieval, Renaissance and Baroque eras, will present a concert 8 p.m. Saturday at University Baptist Church at 1123 W. Main St.
A small string orchestra and organist will perform with the singers. There will be duets and solos.
Paul Walker, associate professor of music and director of early music performance at the University of Virginia, founded Zephyrus in 1991. He will lead the group in Saturday’s concert.
The composers on Saturday’s program wrote well-regarded music but were overshadowed by the talents of Bach and G.F. Handel. Walker said that the best-known composers on the program will be Johann Pachelbel, of “Canon’’ fame, and Dieterich Buxtehude. Also included will be works by Johann Philipp Krieger, Franz Tunder, Andreas Hammerschmidt, Christoph Bernhard and Johann Rosenmuller.
Tickets are $15, $10 for seniors and students. They’re available in advance at New Dominion Bookshop, Greenberry’s and Mincer’s, as well as at the door.
