Britton will read from his new Jefferson piece
Rick Britton of Charlottesville will read from and sign copies of his latest book, “Jefferson: A Monticello Sampler,” at noon Wednesday at New Dominion Bookshop.
Britton has been writing about Thomas Jefferson and Monticello for more than a dozen years. His articles have appeared in newspapers and magazines across the state. Based largely on those works, his book presents an eclectic collection of Jefferson essays.
The book covers Jefferson’s influence on Albemarle, the British raid that almost captured Jefferson, slavery along Monticello’s Mulberry Row, Jefferson’s friendship with Italian vintner Filippo Mazzei, William Clark’s 1807 trek to in search of mastodon bones, Lafayette’s visit to Monticello and Jefferson’s founding of the University of Virginia.
Britton is a historian, writer, photographer and cartographer. His previous books include “Albemarle and Charlottesville: An Illustrated History of the First 150 Years.”

Live Poets, Game Day in store at local library
Live Poets Society will be sharing its original poetry at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Gordon Avenue Library.
People are invited to come out and listen.

l The Central Library will become game central for teens in grades 6 to 12 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Thursday.
The afternoon of board and video games will feature Wii Play on the Wii, and Dance Dance Revolution on the PS2. Refreshments will served.

UVa’s Canady pens book with JMU’s Rettig
Robert Lynn Canady, a professor emeritus at the University of Virginia and school scheduling expert, has just published a book on elementary school scheduling.
Canady and Michael Rettig from James Madison University have worked with hundreds of school districts to improve their schedules and have previously written best-selling books on scheduling for middle and high schools.
“Elementary School Scheduling: Enhancing Instruction for Student Achievement” is first their book to address the scheduling challenges of elementary schools.
The book includes more than 100 schedules and also provides a CD to help create efficient school days for all their teachers and students.
