Harvest Music Festival returns to Oakencroft

Oakencroft Winery will present its Harvest Music Festival from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday and Monday. Jimmy O will perform from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday and the Ryalls Brothers play Monday. There will be tours, tastings of award-winning wines and light fare. Picnics are welcome.

DelFosse prepares to roll out picnic blanket

DelFosse Vineyards and Winery will have its BBQ Picnic from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday.

BBQ Brothers will prepare the all-you-can-eat buffet, with a menu by Bill Siewert that includes slowly smoked barbecued pork and chicken, hamburger rolls, cole slaw, potato salad, sweet tea and Hogsauces.

Jan Smith and Jeff Vogelgesang will provide the music.

A complimentary wine glass is included, and there will be a 10 percent discount on wines purchased at the event.

Discover what’s in store in Stanardsville

The fourth annual Discover Virginia event featuring 15 regional wineries will be from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday on a farm on U.S. 33 in Stanardsville.

Wineries will include Barboursville Vineyards, Cardinal Point Vineyard and Winery, Defuse Vineyards and Winery, Discard Vineyards, First Colony Winery, Gabriele Rausse Winery, Horton Vineyards, Kluge Estate Winery and Vineyard, Leo Grand Vineyards, Peaks of Otter Winery, Rebec Vineyards, Rockbridge Vineyards and Stone Mountain Vineyards.

There will be crafts from jewelry to pottery, specialty foods, children’s activities and children’s performers.

Bands will include William Walter and Co., Sons of Bill, Robert Jospe and Inner Rhythm, Jan Smith Band, Beleza Brasil, the Rogan Brothers and Jim Waive and the Young Divorcees.

Tickets are $25 at the gate and $22 in advance, which includes a commemorative wine glass and tastings.

Head south for ‘North by Northwest’ event

Chateau Morrissette will present a cinema event on the winery lawn on Saturday.

Silver-screen classics will include Alfred Hitchcock’s “North by Northwest’’ starring Cary Grant. A food and wine tent will sell sandwiches, snacks, beverages and wine. Bring your own blankets or seating, but leave picnic baskets, coolers and outside food at home.

International wines are focus at Wintergreen

Wintergreen Performing Arts will present its International Wine Festival from noon to 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the Evans Center at Wintergreen Resort.

Wines from around the world will be featured for guests to taste and compare. In addition to Virginia vintages, wines will be available from Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, New Zealand, Argentina, Chile, South Africa and California.

The Jazz Rascals will perform. Foods will be available, and there will be a craft fair.

Time to sharpen up your skills with new class

Charlottesville Cooking School will offer a short course with Martha Stafford, “Beginning Knife Skills,’’ from 10 a.m. to noon Sept. 3 and 6 p.m. Sept. 10.

Students will learn knife skills while preparing a light, fresh menu using local vegetables. The menu includes bruschetta with tomato and basil, tabbouleh and farmers’ market salad.

The class is $45 for one session.

Folks who’d like to learn to prepare Thai cuisine can start with “Thai Cooking 1: Introduction to the Taste and Flavors of Thailand’’ with Ashley Clarke at 6 p.m. Sept. 4. Clarke will teach students what skills and tools they’ll need to cook Thai dishes at home. Students will learn to make green curry paste with a mortar and pestle and prepare hot and sour prawn soup, green mango salad, green curry with chicken and tropical fruit skewers with chili sugar.
