To market, to market is first for local community
The first farmers’ market within a residential community opened last month. The Forest Lakes Homeowners Association Farmers’ Market joined the local list of places to buy fresh produce on June 4.
The Forest Lakes Farmers’ Market will be held weekly in the South Recreational Facility parking area at 1650 Ashwood Blvd. The time is set from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays.
Forest Lakes is on U.S. 29, about six miles north of Charlottesville.
Kansas-style barbecue comes to Louisa festival
Small Country Campground and the Trevilians Volunteer Fire Company will present the inaugural Que and Cruz on Friday and Saturday at Small Country Campground in Louisa.
This year’s proceeds will benefit the fire company and Small Country’s Children’s Christmas Fund.
It is one of only three sanctioned Kansas City-style barbecue events in Virginia, the others being in Danville and Chesapeake. Sanctioned by the Mid-Atlantic BBQ Association, the contest will have competitors in four categories — chicken, ribs, pulled pork and brisket — and offer $3,500 in prize money. The winner gets a Virginia state championship with a proclamation letter from Gov. Tim Kaine and will be eligible in the draw for the Jack Daniels Invitational World BBQ Championship in Lynchburg, Tenn.
Car and truck enthusiasts who wish to show off their vehicles pay $15 to reserve a display space in advance or $20 to enter at the gate. Trophies will be awarded for the top-25 best in show.

Clarke will teach you about preparing pad Thai
Charlottesville Cooking School will present “Thai Cooking 2’’ with Ashley Clarke from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday.
The class features coconut milk soup with chicken, steamed fish with lemon grass and lime, pad Thai, vegetable yellow curry, sticky rice with mango and Thai iced tea.
The class is $65.
Clarke also is hosting a “Basics of Quick and Healthy Cooking 2’’ today from 6 to 10 p.m. She will prepare Korean pork loin with pineapple salsa, peanut noodles, summer vegetables and raspberry gratin.
This class will be repeated on Aug. 7.
The class is $65, and children ages 12 and older are welcome with an adult in the days class.

The Madison Chamber of Commerce will present its 2008 Summer Mixer from 6 to 8 p.m. July 21 at the Last Nickel on Main Street in Madison. Reservations are due by Thursday.
There will be bluegrass by Homemade Jam, and refreshments will be served.

It’s too late to pick your own cherries in Valley
Spring Valley Orchard has closed its pick-your-own-cherries program for the season.
At Chiles Peach Orchard, peach picking is in full swing. The farm market has ready-picked peaches, sweet cherries, nectarines, Lodi summer cooking apples, white peaches and donut peaches. Ask for samples. There also will be fresh local produce, gourmet food items, wines from Prince Michel Winery, jams, jellies, chips, salsa and more.
The ice cream parlor offers fresh peach milkshakes, peach sundaes and peach frozen yogurt.
Hours at Chiles are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays. On Thursdays, Chiles is open until 8 p.m.

Drive a car, get a gift card for free groceries
Brown Automotive has selected Kroger as its supermarket of choice for the month-long Subaru Market Sweep Event.
All customers who test drive a new Subaru in July will receive a $25 Kroger gift card, which can be used for groceries or gas.
Everyone who participates will be entered into a drawing to receive a shopping spree. Two winners will be chosen on July 26 to race through Kroger and grab as many grocery items as possible. Brown Subaru will pay for the groceries and donate a portion of the proceeds to Meals on Wheels.

See if you can guess the wines at Burnley tasting
Burnley Vineyards will hold a Mystery Wine Tasting this weekend.
The winery in Barboursville will offer four flights of wine, with one Burnley wine in each flight from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
Visitors will be given the list of all wines tasted, but not in the correct order. Wines from France, Germany, Missouri, California and Virginia will be sampled.
The cost is $10.

Fossett’s toasts Spottswoode with signature dinner
Fossett’s Restaurant and Keswick Hall will be hosting a Spottswoode Winery Wine Dinner on Thursday.
A reception will begin at 6:45 p.m. in Villa Crawford, followed by dinner at 7 in Fossett’s.
The event is part of the Fossett’s California series featuring the award-winning wines of Spottswoode Winery in Napa. This family-owned vineyard and winery is produces Cabernet and Sauvignon Blanc. Lindy Novak, proprietor and sales director, will be the featured guest.
The dinner will include Kite’s bacon seared giant diver’s scallops, foie gras, confit of duck leg, tenderloin of prime Virginia bison and a trui of Virginia cheeses. Spottwoode wines will be paired with each course.
The cost of the signature dinner is $139, plus tax and gratuity.
