Siips holds amateur chef event to help SPCA

Siips Wine and Champagne Bar will host the Charlottesville Top Amateur Chef Cook-off to benefit the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. today, Oct. 15 and Oct. 22 Amateur chefs will prepare dishes for tasting by Charlottesville foodies. Winners will be chosen by vote of a celebrity panel of judges and by the attendees. The preliminary rounds will be today and Oct. 15, with the final cook-off on Oct. 22.

“We have some very talented chefs participating and this is a wonderful opportunity for local foodies to enjoy some great food and wine while helping the homeless animals of Charlottesville.” said Susanne Kogut.

Tickets are $20 per event or $50 for all three and includes a tasting menu and a sample of wine.

Attendees will also be eligible to win a two night stay at the Mimslyn Inn in Luray. For more information, call 964-3314.

Local Food Lions polish up for new unveiling

Thirteen Food Lion store in the area will unveil their new looks today.

After months of renovations, the stores will have their grand re-opening with new meat, deli and produce departments, an expanded wine selection and Western Union and Coinstar services, Rug Doctor rentals and floral departments.

Several of the stores will offer a Nature’s Place organic and natural food sections, expanded international offerings and olive carts. Charlottesville renewal Food Lions are at Fifth Street, Riverbend Road, Timberwood Boulevard, Branchlands Boulevard and Mill Creek Drive. Other stores in the area are in Dillwyn, Gordonsville, Louisa, Lovingston, Madison, Orange, Palmyra and Ruckersville.

Performance, workshop are Not Same Old Grind

Not the Same Old Grind in Orange will present a performance and workshop, “What Is My Time For … and Where Does It Keep Going?” from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday or Oct. 25.

The Time Overthrown/Creative Spirit performance and workshop is based on Greg Allen’s CD “It’s Time That Time Was Overthrown’’ and the wisdom of Alice the Canine Messiah.
