Organizers at Ash Lawn-Highland, the home of fifth U.S. president James Monroe, are enjoying 2007 but can't wait for 2008.

The 535-acre working farm in Albemarle County hosted its first summer camp for children this year, and applications to participate quickly exceeded the 20 available slots. The youths learned about Monroe and his estate during the week of activities. Ideas for a similar program next year are in the works.

Visitors to the estate on any given day will learn about the man behind the Monroe Doctrine and his (somewhat erroneous) depiction in the painting "Washington Crossing the Delaware," as well as what role he played in determining the modern American flag.

Monroe's 250th birthday falls in 2008, and plenty of festivities are being planned to honor his accomplishments. Keep an eye on the Web site for details.

The house is open for tours from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. April through October, and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. November through March. Admission for adults is $9, $8 seniors and AAA members with ID, $5 for children ages 6 to 11 and for residents of Albemarle and adjacent localities. One local resident is admitted free with each out-of-town paying guest.
