Useful information
AUTO DECALS: County stickers must be obtained by April 15 each year. New residents must buy them within 10 days of putting state tags on their vehicles unless they already have valid stickers from other Virginia counties. There is a $2 fee for transferring stickers from other counties if the sticker is still current. Stickers are $20 for motorcycles, $25 for all other vehicles and are available at the treasurer’s office. Stickers for towed campers and boat trailers vary by weight.
DOG TAGS: $3 per tag; required by Feb. 1 of each year. Can be purchased at the treasurer’s office.
EMERGENCY: Dial 9-1-1.
LANDFILL: Residents can dispose of residential garbage at five recycling centers: on U.S. 15 in Arvonia, on U.S. 15 in Dillwyn, on Route 655 and on Route 600. There is also a center on Route 56 that is not full-service. Residents must have a sticker from the county office to use these facilities. Information: 969-4242.
VOTER REGISTRATION: Office is located in basement of Housewright House Museum across U.S. 60 from Buckingham County courthouse. Margaret Thomas is the registrar of voters. 969-4304.

Meetings
BOARD OF SUPERVISORS: Second Monday of each month at 7 p.m. in the Buckingham County Agricultural Center on U.S. 60.
SCHOOL BOARD: The second Wednesday of each month in the Window Room of the Vocational School on U.S. 60, though the location and time may change for holidays. Information: 969-6100.
PLANNING COMMISSION: Fourth Monday at 7 p.m. in the County Administration Conference Room.
BOARD OF ZONING APPEALS: When called by Planning Commission; County Administrator’s conference room.
Town of Dillwyn
The town has a seven-member council elected at large to two-year terms. The mayor is elected by popular vote; the vice mayor is selected by council members. The Dillwyn Town Council meets the second Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Town Hall.
