Useful information

AUTO DECALS: Fees: $25 for cars, $14 for motorcycles. Purchase by Feb. 15 at the treasurer’s office. After Aug. 16, auto decals cost $12.50, and their price is reduced again in November. The county also honors decals from other localities in Virginia.

DOG TAGS: Single dog tags: $10, $5 for neutered pets. Purchase at the treasurer’s office. Tags valid for a year. Kennel tags also available: $30 for up to nine dogs; $40 for 10 to 19; $50 for 20.

EMERGENCY: Dial 9-1-1.

LANDFILL: Located at 358 Mays Road, the waste transfer station is open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The recycling center, open the same hours, is next to the landfill. The center accepts plastics types one and two; glass containers; mixed waste paper, which includes magazines, telephone books, junk mail, catalogs, cereal boxes, egg cartons and colored paper; white office paper; cardboard; metal cans, motor oil and anti-freeze. The center also accepts tires, but there is a $2 per car tire charge, a $5 truck tire charge and a $10 tractor tire charge. Information: (434) 985-5215.

BOARD OF SUPERVISORS: Second and fourth Tuesday of each month at 5:30 p.m. in the meeting room of the county office building in Stanardsville.

PLANNING COMMISSION: Third Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in the county office building.

SCHOOL BOARD: Second Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the county office building.

BOARD OF ZONING APPEALS: Fourth Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in the county office building.

Town of Stanardsville

The town elects a mayor and four councilors at-large to four-year terms. The council meets at 7:30 p.m. the second Monday of the month in the Stanardsville Town Hall, adjacent to the post office on Celt Road. 990-6511
