Montpelier, home of President James Madison, continues to be a fascinating study in the restoration of a national treasure.
Since 2003 a $29 million renovation has been under way at the Orange County estate on Route 20, 4 miles south of Orange. According to the Montpelier Foundation, the intent is to return the mansion "in size, structure, form and furnishings to the home that James and Dolley Madison created and loved."
The exterior has been fully restored and the 15,000-square-foot visitor's center was recently completed. It features a cafe, gift shop, galleries and exhibits.
The overall restoration is expected to continue through most of 2008, but the estate remains open for tours.
The ongoing project provides visitors to the 2,750-acre estate a special opportunity to see the restoration of one of the most historically significant homes in the nation. Visitors are also invited to see Madison furniture on display at special exhibits in the Education Center, as well as tour the formal garden and National Landmark Forest.
In addition to the tours that are conducted daily except on Thanksgiving and Christmas, the estate features a number of special events, including horse races. The home of the fourth president is owned by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and is among the most popular tourist attractions in the area.
Hours of operation are 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. November through March and 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. April through October. Friends of Montpelier are admitted for free. Admission for adults is $12, $6 for children 6-14 and free for children 5 and under. Special rates are available for large adult and school groups. Fees includes admission to the grounds, house and other seasonal tours. For additional information, visit www.montpelier.org or call (540) 672-2728.
