Virginia State Police are investigating a fiery car crash Wednesday evening that killed a 19-year-old Louisa man.
The crash happened shortly after 6:30 p.m. on U.S. 250 at the intersection of Route 696, also known as Mallory Road. Troopers say a 1995 Chevrolet Monte Carlo traveling westbound ran off the left side of the road and struck an embankment. The vehicle then went airborne, struck a tree, and caught fire, according to Trooper M.S. Riley’s investigation.
Police say they will not release the name of the driver, who died at the scene, until he has been positively identified. The man died at the crash scene. Investigators do not know if he was wearing a seatbelt.
Investigators say excessive speed is a possible factor in the crash but noted that the cause remains under investigation.
