Berkshire Road apartment fire under control

Charlottesville firefighters were called to 2208 N. Berkshire Road just after 6 a.m. and found heaving smoke and fire in the duplex. Police had already arrived on the scene and pulled a victim from an open window who was then taken to the hospital. Fire officials say the began on the ground floor inthe kitchen. Residents on the other side of the duplex made it out on their own.

Firefighters are putting out hotspots and investigating the cause of a blaze in a duplex at 2208 N. Berkshire Road.
Firefighters are keeping an eye on the home as occasional flare-ups of the fire continue in the basement and kitchen, where most of the fire damage occured.
Firefighters arrived on the scene about 6:10 a.m. and to find smoke coming from the attic of the building and flames engulfing the basement apartment. A resident of the burning apartment was taken out of the building by police shortly before the fire officials arrival and was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. Other apartment residents were evacuated as firefighters fought the flames from outside of the building and carefully progressed through the interior.
A report that another person could be in the building turned out to be unfounded.
Intense flames on the ground floor and thick smoke in the attic made fighting the fire tricky as crews took position both outside of the building and inside as did reports that chemicals of some sort may have been stored in the building.
Traffic is blocked around the intersection of Berkshire and Angus Road to protect the crews and firehoses hooked up to hydrants.
