Allen W. Groves has been appointed as the University of Virginia’s associate vice president and dean of students.
Groves, a 1990 graduate of UVa’s School of Law, has served as the university’s interim dean of students for the past nine months.
Groves joined UVa’s administration in May 2006 as a student affairs fundraiser, a position that he continued to hold while serving as interim dean. Prior to coming to UVa, Groves was a labor and employment attorney with Seyfarth Shaw LLP in Atlanta.
In 1998, Groves became a member of the board of directors of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. From 2004 to 2006, he was the board’s president. In April, he was elected to the board of directors of the National Intrafraternity Conference.
Groves succeeds Penny Rue, who left UVa last summer to become vice chancellor for student affairs at the University of California-San Diego.
In appointing Groves, UVa has made its third major hiring announcement in recent weeks.
The university had previously named Meredith Jung-En Woo as its dean of the College & Graduate School of Arts & Sciences and named Dorrie K. Fontaine as its dean of the School of Nursing.
