Charlottesville Fire Chief Charles Werner has been named the career fire chief of the year by Fire Chief magazine.
Werner is a 32-year veteran of the fire service, and became the department’s fire chief in 2005. Additionally, in May, he was elected chairman of the Executive Committee of the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Emergency Communications and Office for Interoperability and Compatibility.
He was nominated for the magazine’s annual award by the Ruckersville Volunteer Fire Company, the Maryland Fire Chiefs Association and the Virginia Fire Chiefs Association with support from Virginia Gov. Timothy M. Kaine.
