Charlottesville Fire Chief Charles Werner has been elected chairman of the Executive Committee of the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Emergency Communications and Office for Interoperability and Compatibility.
Werner’s leadership will guide the committee as it provides state and local perspectives to the federal government.
Werner, a 32-year veteran of the fire service, is the only person to receive the Virginia Governor’s Award for Excellence in Fire Service Management three times. Werner has also served as chairman and is a current member of Virginia’s Statewide Interoperability Executive Committee.
In his new role, Werner will succeed the late Marilyn Praisner of Montgomery County, Md. She died in February.
