Nine University of Virginia researchers have been awarded a total of $10 million to study diseases associated with smoking.
Researchers will conduct the study for three years and hope to learn more about treatment of smoking-related diseases, according to UVa’s announcement released Friday.
“We have long understood that smoking causes extensive damage to our bodies. What have not been studied are the mechanisms by which smoking causes diseases such as lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and emphysema,” said Dr. Erik Hewlett, senior associate dean for research at UVa.
Tobacco is the leading cause of preventable deaths in the United States and smoking-related diseases are responsible for more than $150 billion in annual health-related expenses in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The UVa research program was created in 2007 after a gift from Philip Morris USA.

I happen to have been a victim of asthmatic bronchitis, a respiratory disease which is known as an auto
immune illness, mine being caused by
people smoking in my wrkplace, with a
subsequent progression 5 years later to a more serious auto immune illness which is known as Myasthena Gravis,
limited ocular with diplopia. Treated by a smart drug Mestinon.
My physician denied any connection to my Asthmatic Bronchitis/auto immune so after several years, I weaned myself off the mestinon, realizing that second hand smoke was a trigger for my MG, I avoided second hand tobacco smoke, not that hard to do in California. Then exactly 10 years to the month after the onset of the MG, my diplopia and other symptoms went into remission and I could again see with both eyes tracking
normally. However, my life is limited to living in California where we have good tobacco control and second hand smoke is virtually non-existant in my life.
This story is for the purpose of asking for the school to research auto immune illnesses such as MG and perhaps others
such as MS relative to second hand
tobacco smoke, auto immune illness being such a mysterious illness.
