Police are investigating why a local man slammed his car into a power pole Wednesday night at Cherry Avenue and Highland Avenue.
The man, whom police declined to identify, suffered injuries in the crash and is being treated at the University of Virginia Medical Center.
The wreck forced Dominion Virginia Power to cut electricity to about 340 customers while it replaced the pole.
Sgt. Tito Durrette said the man's white Mercedes-Benz sedan may have been involved in a hit-and-run wreck and was driving at a high rate of speed when it struck a power pole.
The driver ran from the accident scene but was apprehended by police.
"We're still investigating the incident to determine exactly what happened," Durrette said.
