Charlottesville police have provided more details on the early-morning shooting that left a 19-year-old city man dead.
Around 3 a.m., police responded to the 700 block of Sixth Street Southeast after hearing gunfire while on patrol.
“When they responded to the area, one of the officers discovered the body of a male subject who died of an apparent gunshot wound,” Charlottesville Police Chief Timothy J. Longo said late this afternoon. “The detectives have been working nonstop, along with crime scene investigators, gathering facts relevant to the event.”
A small memorial has been started at the site of the shooting, which is across from the Friendship Court apartment complex. A pinwheel in the memorial had “RIP Spankie” written on its petals.
No further information about the victim or the incident has been made available. Anyone with in-formation should contact Crimestoppers at 977-4000.
