Nearly nine months passed before the year’s first homicide in Albemarle County.
Now, in a matter of two weeks, there have been two killings in the county. The most recent one happened late Tuesday at Autumn Hill Apartments on Commonwealth Drive.
One man was killed and two others wounded after a disagreement escalated into a shooting, according to Albemarle County police.
Police continue searching for a man they believe was the shooter. He is described as a 6-foot-tall white male in his 20s with blond, shoulder-length hair. He may also have a prominent mole or other marking on his face, police said. He was last seen wearing a “hoodie”-style sweatshirt.
Authorities have not released any names of the victims in the shooting.
The shooting capped an already busy day for county police that included an unrelated robbery at the Barracks Road Market on Barracks Road and a search for a missing 50-year-old man in the Cedar Mountain area in the Shenandoah National Park.
Officials said officers were called to an apartment in the 2200 block of Commonwealth Drive around 11:20 p.m. Tuesday after neighbors heard gunshots and found one man fatally shot and two others injured. The two men are being treated at the University of Virginia Medical Center.
Investigators say the incident apparently occurred after a man visited the apartment and a fight began, leading to shots being fired. The shooter then ran away.
In the county’s other shooting death, 23-year-old Travis Marricus Scott was killed Sept. 17 in an altercation at University Heights Apartments. A city man and 15-year-old male have been charged with robbery in the case. Another man was charged with second-degree murder, but that charge was dropped. That investigation continues.
