A plan to reduce chemical toxins in Albemarle County schools by restricting traditional pesticides and disinfectants won support from a handful of residents Thursday.

The residents spoke during the public comment portion of the county School Board’s meeting. The board also heard a report about the costs and benefits of the plan, which calls for the use of “green certified” organic products.

In June, the Board of Supervisors unanimously supported the use of compounds that are considered much less toxic than chemicals traditionally used to keep schools clean.

The new policy would leave bathrooms sanitized but not disinfected.

Several speakers at Thursday’s public hearing suggested that there would be little harm in using compounds with less toxicity, despite little evidence that chemical disinfectants are dangerous.

Officials estimate that the change would cost the school district about $73,000 to $100,000 in fiscal 2009.

The board had not taken any action on the matter at press time.

This is another example of Americans with too much time on their hands.
To spend this much money to appease a small group to solve a perceived problem instead of using those dollars for improved teacher’s salaries is the easy way out.

I acutually think this is a pretty good idea.  Using various chemicals for cleaning really isn’t necessary, good old vinegar and baking soda do a great job.  See sites like this:  http://www.checnet.org/healtheHouse/education/top10-detail.asp?Top10_Cat_ID=16

I would have rather seen the money go to seatbelts on buses instead of this issue which really hasn’t been an issue IF done intelligently.  It sounds green so it must be needed!  What do we do for the child who is exposed to second hand smoke at home?  Could something at home be causing the asthma?  Duh!

This world has too many special interest groups and they are strangling me.....h e l p!!!
