School officials have named a roadway after former Albemarle High School Principal Benjamin F. Hurt.
Hurt was the school’s principal for 30 years, beginning in 1954 — and headed the school during racial integration and as the county experienced tremendous growth, according to a school spokeswoman.
Agnor-Hurt Elementary is named after Hurt, a Crozet resident, along with former Albemarle County executive Guy Agnor.
Hurt is also a World War II veteran.
Hurt was one of the most influential educators in the Charlottesville-Albemarle area, according to county schools Superintendent Pamela Moran, who called him a gentleman who “never forgets a name and a face” and has inspired and touched many lives.
Benjamin Hurt Drive will connect Albemarle High School with Hydraulic Road.
