The Albemarle County Planning Commission made a recommendation Tuesday that could help pave the way for a new $30 million academic building at St. Anne’s-Belfield.

The commission recommended that the Albemarle Board of Supervisors approve a special use permit that would allow the school to increase students on the Belfield campus from 300 to 550.

Approval of the special use permit by the Board of Supervisors would be the first step toward St. Anne’s-Belfield ultimately constructing the 90,000-square-foot facility.

The commission voted in favor of the recommendation, 5-2, with some changes made to the conditions recommended by staff.

New academic buildings would accommodate students in pre-school through 8th grade and shift the middle school from its Charlottesville campus to the Albemarle campus, according to the planning staff report summary.
