RICHMOND, Va. (AP) _ Virginia Commonwealth University is forming a task force to review its policies on corporate research in the wake of a controversy over a consulting contract with tobacco manufacturer Philip Morris USA.
VCU’s vice president for research Francis Macrina said the group is scheduled to meet Tuesday. It will examine all aspects of research for corporations and is to issue a report by Oct. 1.
Macrina said he expects the group will discuss whether to refuse to accept money from tobacco companies, as several universities have. The panel will include top research officers from each of the university’s schools, as well as six faculty members.
