Five men died early Sunday when their rental car crashed into a Fluvanna County creek.

Police believe alcohol, speed and a lack of seat-belts were all factors in the crash, which is among the region’s deadliest in recent memory.

The victims, who were all related, included Joseph Alfred Scruggs, 36, of Huntersville, N.C.; Carlton Eugene Washing-ton, 47, of Bremo Bluff; Joseph Ross, 49, of Bremo Bluff; Jason L. Ross, 27, of Bremo Bluff; and Larry Jermaine Jones, 25, of Palymra, according to a Virginia State Police spokesman.

To my family I will be praying for comfort for us all, and for my brother Larry “Pooh” Jones I will greatly miss you and I love you very much!! We all have to lean and depend on God right now!!
