The Charlottesville City Council and Albemarle County Board of Supervisors are holding a joint work session today to discuss a regional transit authority and how to proceed with legislation.
Officials are expected to discuss findings and recommendations in the draft final study of such a regional authority, revenue options and the body’s structure, among other things.
Permission from the Virginia General Assembly is required to establish the regional authority, which would allow the localities to enact taxes or fees to expand the area bus service. Officials hope to present legislation to the General Assembly in January, and if established, the authority would work to assume responsibility for the Charlottesville Transit Service by January 2010.
The work session is at 10 a.m. at the City Space on the Downtown Mall. Public comment will be permitted.
