Several shots were fired between midnight and 2 am Thursday at the Dupont Community Credit Union on Lucy Lane in Waynesboro, hitting a window and exterior wall, as well as a sign and a repossessed van parked in front of the building, police said.
Wayensboro police also responded at 1:30 am to reports of shots fired on North Commerce Avenue. They initially found nothing, but returned later in the day and located a shell casing and a bullet hole in the side of a private residence. No information about the gun’s caliber was available Thursday afternoon.
Investigators will be comparing evidence from the North Commerce Avenue and Dupont Credit Union crime scenes to see if the shootings are related, said Sgt. Kelly Walker of the Waynesboro police department.
State and local police are also working together to determine whether these incidents are linked to the string of shootings along Interstate 64 that occurred around the same time.
“We’re certainly sharing information with investigators over there and gleaning information from the as well,” said Sgt. Walker.
There are no reports of injuries related to either of the Waynesboro incidents.
“We’re just thankful it was during the night and no one was here,” said Jackie Cason, vice president of human resources at the Dupont Credit Union.
An older model, light colored AMC Gremlin with a dark stripe running the length of the vehicle was caught on a surveillance camera at the credit union. Investigators are requesting that anyone with information regarding the vehicle or the shooting contact the Waynesboro Police epartment at 540-942-2017, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-322-2017.
