That’s the ticket: Who has the sweet spots at the arena?

In addition to suites set aside for university President John T. Casteen III and Athletic Director Craig Littlepage, the following individuals and organizations have signed contracts to lease suites for five or more years:

An arena full of possibilities

The 15,000-seat Taj Mahal of basketball, which opens its doors to the Wahoos this season, raises Virginia’s arena status from the third-smallest in the ACC (only recent newcomers Boston College and Miami feature smaller facilities) to the fourth-largest in the 12-team league (North Carolina, N.C. State and Maryland are bigger).

Here comes The Jack

Richard Laurance, who directed the new John Paul Jones Arena’s construction, said one word has described people’s reaction: “Wow.” The exterior includes the mandated “Jeffersonian” touches. The interior sports one of the most sophisticated setups in the country - complete with a 42,000-pound video scoreboard, 15,000 seats and athletic facilities that an NBA star would envy.

Under construction

As director of the new John Paul Jones Arena, Laurance has overseen the construction of the 15,000-seat building, which has lasted more than four years. It is his last project before he retires, having had a role in most major building efforts in recent memory at UVa. “Tonight is the final exam,” Laurance said. “And here I am wearing a suit. But what can you do.” He left a half-hour into the presentation, during which two UVa officials explained to about 75 people the many university projects under way or planned.
