Support appreciated for freedom of expression

In recent years a number of products from China have been contaminated: pet food, toothpaste, children’s toys and now milk products.

Who will control your pocketbook?

The place of your wallet in the economy is very important; of even greater importance is your liberty.

Goode shows poor form in TV ads

Virgil Goode’s television ads are certainly the most despicable I have seen in a very long lifetime.

McCain didn’t think this through

In choosing his running mate, Sen. John McCain bypassed some of the most-qualified, best-known public figures from his own party for Sarah Palin, the least qualified and the least known.

Single-issue voting silly, dangerous

A letter from an Albemarle County couple on Oct. 22 (“Obama’s liberal morality found to be lacking,” The Daily Progress) gives the opinion that Barack Obama is not a fit leader for our country because of his stand on abortion and gay rights.

Obama not all he claims to be

All my reasons for voting against Barack Obama boil down to this: He’s a fraud.

Gasoline price raise suspicions

Isn’t it grand that gasoline prices have fallen by 10 cents overnight?

Virginia poised to transcend race

I was born and raised in Virginia, a Roanoke hillbilly, and I’m just amazed right now. It seems true that my beloved Virginia is poised to transcend race.

Dems will guard Social Security

President Bush attempted unsuccessfully to privatize this economic resource, and John McCain was a major spokesperson in that attempt.

Think again about candidate ‘vetting’

Barack Obama was president of Harvard Law Review, which was unlikely to have been more concerned about affirmative action than its scholarly reputation.

The word from church on voting

I would like to try to clear up misinformation some people seem to have about “the Catholic vote.”

Dems will guard social security

I am concerned about the immediate future of Social Security.

Thanks, media, for lower gas prices

I want to thank the press and television media for the recent reports of the price gouging of gasoline in the Charlottesville area.

‘Noyes Fluddle’ a credit to community

One of the joys of living in Charlottesville is the spirit of community.

Physicians do care; just ask Dr. Morris

I read a letter in The Daily Progress a few days ago where this lady said that doctors do not care about their patients anymore (“Leaders must look beyond their power,” Oct. 4).

Anti-gun violence walk a success

I am writing to express my sincere appreciation for the participants in the Quality Community Council Walks! Against Gun Violence.

Goode’s attacks on challenger Perriello unfair

I was deeply disappointed when Virgil Goode turned his back on his supporters in the Democratic Party.

All my reasons for voting against Barack Obama boil down to this: He’s a fraud.

Think again about candidate ‘vetting’

In a recent letter, the writer claims that Barack Obama’s race has shielded him from vetting and that his success is a sort of affirmative inaction by the press (The Daily Progress, Oct. 10).

Democrats deserve congressional boot

In a couple of weeks, Virginians can go to the polls and vote for Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid.

Enough neutrality; I’m backing Obama

I am an independent. I have my liberal side, and my conservative side. I pride myself on keeping my head during campaign and election times, and coming up with a balanced view.

A vote for McCain is a vote for moderation

When the Congress decides, for whatever reason, to give the chief executive a bye and allow him to do whatever he pleases, things sometimes go awry.

No reason to fear long voting lines

It was irresponsible for The Daily Progress to print a headline on the front page on Oct. 15 declaring that we should “expect long lines on Election Day.”

Vote Goode for free enterprise

I would like to endorse Republican Virgil Goode for re-election to Congress.

Democrats have skills to help us

When I was a child growing up in Virginia, I decided I liked Ike. Then, my father sat me down: “You shouldn’t vote for someone just because he’s a war hero.“

Goode is better for our economy

To me the choice is clear in this election. If you want a depression vote for Tom Perriello. If you want a short recession, vote for Virgil Goode.

Science still depends on individual efforts

In an Oct. 19 story on the University of Virginia’s planning process,James Hilton, vice president and chief information officer, is quoted as saying, “The image of the lone scientist working in a lab is long dead,” as illustrating the ever increasing collaborative nature of scientific research work. I find this statement, at best, utterly awkward and misinformed.
