I am concerned about the immediate future of Social Security.

I have long roots in Virginia.

I wonder: Do Virginians, as well as all Americans, realize that a vote for Barack Obama is also a vote for Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid?

Thomas Sowell’s column “Obama’s character not presidential” (The Daily Progress, Oct. 18) addressed a major reason, among many, why we believe that Sen. Barack Obama would be a poor choice for president of the United States.

Based upon the candidates’ records, Jim Gilmore should be the clear choice as our next senator.

If you like what the Bush administration has done to your investment and savings accounts through deregulation and lax oversight of the financial services industry, Sen. John McCain is planning a similar, radical reform for your health care.

We should not overlook the moral obligation each of us has to protect the unborn and vulnerable members of our society.

I am deeply upset by the damage to Obama/Warner/Perriello campaign signs here in Nelson County.

Energy Independence is too important to America’s well being to not do something dramatic and immediate.

Now we read that the chairman of the Republican Party of Virginia, Jeffery Frederick, has prepared a group of volunteers going door-to-door in this presidential campaign in support of John McCain by saying that Barack Obama and Osama bin Laden “both have friends that bombed the Pentagon” and “that’s scary.”

I was disappointed to read Thomas Sowell’s Oct. 11 column on Barack Obama’s character (“Oba-ma’s character not presidential,” The Daily Progress).

It’s a sad state of affairs when the best we can say is “One out of five ain’t bad”!

In this election cycle both national parties are calling for change. Though each party has its spin on the subject, there is unanimity in the declaration that Washington is broken.

Following the vice-presidential debate, on a radio news program I heard a political correspondent say, to paraphrase, that Joe Biden was intelligent, articulate and had a strong sense for both domestic and foreign policy issues … but that doesn’t necessarily win debates.

I am, I think, a pretty regular American — two kids, two cars — and I would never do anything to put my children’s future at risk.
