The author of “Shooting yourself in the Left foot” (The Daily Progress, June 8) has an extremist view of the way Americans vote, and mocks a large population of people who do not have the same political views as he does.
The author states that he deplores racism and sexism but then goes on to say, “.... what would feminists and African-Americans do if the Republi-cans nominated a pro-life wo-man or a conservative black candidate?” Isn’t that a racist and sexist comment?
Feminists and African-Americans are not the identity of the Democrat Party, in much the same way as white males are not the identity of the Republican Party.
It has been my experience that there are more voters who consider themselves middle of the road rather than extreme conservative Republicans or extreme liberal Democrats.
A feminist is not by definition a liberal, but rather a woman or man who supports political, economic and social equality of the sexes.
A feminist can be pro-life or pro-choice, Republican or Democrat.
I consider myself a feminist and voted for Republican Rob Bell as my state delegate and Democrat Tim Kaine for governor.
I didn’t support everything they represented, but felt that they were the best candidates for those positions.
Given the fact that both candidates won, I assume that many people, like myself, ignored party lines.
I have confidence that American voters are paying more attention than ever to the upcoming presidential election and will elect our future president not because of the color of his skin or what party endorses him, but rather based on who they feel will best lead our country in the right direction.
