It was with great dismay that I learned of the decision to have President George W. Bush as the guest speaker at this year’s naturalization ceremony at Monticello on July 4. I can think of few people less qualified and less deserving of this honor than our current president.
The speaker at such a momentous event should be a person of honor and integrity, intelligence and vision, and someone who exemplifies the highest standards of U.S. citizenship and respect for the laws and people of this country as well as the cultures and beliefs of other people and countries. By embodying these qualities, such a person can be an inspiration to whom the new U.S. citizens can aspire.
I remember attending a Monticello naturalization ceremony a few years ago when the guest speaker was a person of such exemplary character and ideals, Carl Sagan, and there have been many other qualified and deserving speakers before and since Dr. Sagan. Ken Burns, who was originally scheduled to be the guest speaker this year, would have been equal to the task.
Conversely, George W. Bush pales conspicuously by comparison, and I am embarrassed and ashamed that he will be present on this auspicious occasion at the home of Thomas Jefferson.
Aside from this unfortunate debacle, I do sincerely welcome to our country these new citizens and wish for them happiness, success and, above all, peace in their newfound home.
