On a whim, I recently drove to Oklahoma City to watch the Women’s College World Series in softball. I am so glad that I did.
There were so many positives to the experience:
A reason to cheer for the Hokies.
College ballplayers genuinely having fun doing something they loved.
Sportsmanship, sportsmanship, sportsmanship!
Stands full of hero-worshipping girls (and boys).
Winning and losing players patiently signing autographs for the kids after games.
I sat next to a little 9-year-old girl from Oklahoma who knew the name of every player on the Arizona team. We even scored a game together.
All I kept thinking about was: “for the love of the game.” It was a great experience, and I hope someday the University of Virginia can send a team to the World Series.
