This spring and summer Albemarle County’s entrance corridors have been assaulted with a proliferation of illegal commercial signs, which greatly harm our community’s aesthetic appeal.

It is a violation of state law to place signs in the right-of-way, including areas along sidewalks and at intersections near road signs. It is generally a violation of local ordinances to display commercial signs without a permit.

The overall demand for products isn’t increased by illegal signs; the only people who benefit are the violators, who take away business from those who obey the law.

Also, our important tourism industry is harmed when our community becomes less attractive.

It comes down to whether we want an attractive community or a community cluttered with illegal signs that often become litter when they blow down and are not picked up.
