The Daily Progress July 9 article “Cougar!”, with the debunking comments of Sgt. Ken Dove of the Virginia Depart-ment of Game and Inland Fisheries, has generated dozens of excellent cougar reports from citizens and retired VGIF field officers to the Eastern Puma Research Network, the organization I direct.
They sure paint a much different picture than that of Sgt. Dove.
We have been contacted by 16 citizens whose taxpayer money helps to support the salary of Sgt. Dove. They tell of repeated calls to the offices of VGIF that are ignored; not once has anyone from the state agency returned calls to the witnesses.
Is it no wonder the VGIF claims there no cougars are in Virginia. If it doesn’t respond to the calls of taxpayers who say they have seen cougars, it sure isn’t going to find the evidence of their presence.
Wild, native cougars do exist and are surviving in the Old Dominion.
