Make animals more affordable

I would like to respond to the letter “Animals at SPCA need visitors” (The Daily Progress, April 12).
I am a married mother of five children. We love cats and dogs; we had three cats and two dogs.
We recently moved from Albemarle County to the city, where two of our cats, not used to more traffic, have been killed.
I called the SPCA about adoption, and could not believe how much it costs to adopt a pet now. I would love to add another cat or two to our home, but we cannot afford a $99 fee.
I was glad to hear that the SPCA is trying to find all animals homes and that it is a no-kill facility.

Struggling families like ours, though, can’t afford to give animals homes.

I would love to adopt from the SPCA and make my children happy.

We just wish that, the same as with the spay-and-neuter program, there was a lower adoption fee for low-income families.
