Sen. Barack Obama’s economic plan does not raise taxes on the vast majority of Americans. In fact, under an Obama presidency, middle-class Americans would pay less in taxes than under Sen. John McCain’s plan.

This is clearly detailed in each candidate’s economic platform and is verified by the non-partisan Tax Policy Center. Only the richest 1 percent of Americans would see higher taxes under the Obama plan. The McCain tax breaks mostly benefit high-income taxpayers.

It is disturbing to hear John McCain and Sarah Palin repeatedly, in speeches and ads, falsely accuse Sen. Obama of wanting to raises taxes. McCain and Palin know these attacks are outright lies, and yet they continue to attempt to mislead voters. This scare tactic is a desperate strategy for a Republican ticket that does not have many substantive issues on which to run.

Even more disturbing is the ease with which McCain and Palin continue to lie to the American people. If they are dishonest during the campaign, what does this say about how they would serve us in Washington?

Are these the moral values we want in the next president and vice president of the United States? Isn’t it time we have leaders we can trust in the White House?
