In the in the July 5 Daily Progress headlined “100-plus give a lesson in free speech,” citizen Sarah Lanzman is quoted as saying, “We just want to state our constitutional right that someone who has destroyed our Constitution should not be at the home of a president who initiated it. .... That seems very disrespectful to the memory of Thomas Jefferson.”
One hopes that the new American citizens sworn in at Monticello that day have a better understanding of our history.
Thomas Jefferson was minister to France during the construction of our Constitution and, other than letters between himself and James Madison, had nothing to do with the formulation of the new Constitu-tion.
If citizen Lanzman knew her history she would know that James Madison is quite well known as the “Father of the Constitution.”
Perhaps citizen Lanzman might like to visit Montpelier, the home of James Madison, on Constitution Day, Sept. 17, become acquainted with some historical facts.
