The Daily Progress Aug. 31 editorial, “Debate refusal is damaging,” took former governor and U.S. Senate candidate Mark Warner to task for allegedly refusing to debate his opponent. The sharp criticism would be warranted — if the underlying presumption were true.
The U.S. Senate candidates first debated in mid-July; we have another debate scheduled before the Fairfax Chamber of Commerce on Sept. 18, and we are evaluating additional opportunities for other debates — including broadcast debates — later this fall. Several joint appearances also have been scheduled.
Since January, Gov. Warner has actively campaigned in 85 of Virginia’s 134 localities, and this schedule of direct voter contact is ramping-up significantly now that we’ve reached the traditional Labor Day “kick-off” point on the campaign calendar.
Readers can be assured that Gov. Warner is anxious to talk about his proven record of results and bipartisan approach to leadership, and voters will have ample opportunities to compare his successful record with that of our opponent.
