Ignoring the deer problem
Lake Monticello has a problem, and so does Albemarle — a deer population explosion.
Real role models at the hospital
Recently I took my body (such as it is) to the University of Virginia Medical Center.

It’s hard to be very jolly with unemployment high
It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, but Christmas ain’t what it used to be.
Won’t dredging solve water issue?
I don’t understand the thinking of the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors and the C’ville equivalent on dredging.
Sabato insulting to GOP voters
I am writing in response to the statement made by Larry Sabato in the Nov. 2 front-page article “Polls say McCain win a long shot.”
Progress painfully out of touch
Reading the Nov. 2 letters to the editor, I was nodding in agreement with letter headlined “Concert review an embarrassment” regarding the lame interview by Melissa Ruggieri of Elton John’s concert, and further along another writer’s comments on her views of Jay-Z’s concert at JPJ (“Jay-Z critique embodies racism”).
A good day to be in America
I imagine I was like many parents in taking my children to the voting booth with me on Nov. 4 so they could see this historic moment.
CASA a tough, honorable job
The acronym could also stand for Caring Adults who Serve and Assist.

Nature’s beauty breathtaking
Peak fall colors are slowly sweeping across the commonwealth … and in particular, here in Charlottesville.
Health care woes all around us
I have experienced firsthand what it’s like not to have adequate health insurance coverage. High-quality, affordable health care in America should be a top priority on everyone’s list.
Let’s see what change brings
Spontaneous street parties, people openly weeping tears of deep joy, people falling on their knees in prayers of gratitude — political wins always produce euphoria for the faithful, but none but the most hardened cynic could deny that this celebration was different.

City, county have their redundancies
The federal government, Wall Street, Main Street, the state government and now our local government — everybody’s short of money.
UVa hospital staying where it is
As the University of Virginia Medical Center continues to expand in order to meet the growing health-care needs of our community, decisions made 20 years ago dictate that we stay at our current location in the heart of Charlottesville.

Bad policy behind subprime crisis
This subprime mortgage crisis was precipitated ultimately by bad policy, not deregulation.
McIntire Park worth protecting
McIntire Park is a public city park and should be retained as open space in an increasingly overbuilt city.

Rest of warming meeting not told
Did the reporter stay for the comment session following the Report of the Virginia Climate Change Survey presentation at the Miller Center (“UVa forum reveals Virginians’ views on climate change,” The Daily Progress, Oct. 21)?
Is Fluvanna making best decision?
In a courageous move several months ago, the Fluvanna County Board of Supervisors approved money for a new high school. Estimates at the time predicted the need to borrow something around $70 million. With bond interest, the payback obligation for the taxpayers was estimated at something over $100 million.
Goode time for leadership
Of all the politicians this newspaper has encountered, Virgil H. Goode Jr. is among the most sincere in his efforts for constituents and the least caught up in politics and paybacks.

Next president must deal directly with Iran
A growing number of influential former officials and academic experts support talking to Iran.
Forever riding the financial roller-coaster
I can barely get my head around the latest burst-economic-bubble drama, since I’m still reeling from the tech-boom-gone-bust of eight years ago.

Jay-Z critique embodies racism
Many pieces of Melissa Ruggieri’s review of the Jay-Z concert (“Jay-Z entertaining — when he finally gets there,” The Daily Progress, Oct. 25) are troubling to me, primarily because they embody a sort of institutionalized racism that is only harmful to our community.
Geese were doing nothing wrong
The front-page article “Pooch named Tweed diligently protects country club’s golf course” (The Daily Progress, Oct. 21) is sad, erroneous and distressing.
Concert review an embarrassment
I was appalled that Melissa Ruggieri’s review in the Oct. 18 paper was headlined “Voice shows age, but John still rocks” (The Daily Progress).
Preserving our liberties
Americans still deserve the right to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness. And the man to protect those rights is John McCain.

Officials make commute safer
Thanks to several local officials, State Farm employees’ commute is safer and easier today.
Thanks for help with ‘Last Dance’
Thanks to many musicians, sponsors and fans, the sold-out event was a monumental success, raising more than $6,000 for the University of Virginia Children’s Hospital and Voices for Animals.
Horticulture class a great fresh start
This is a great program. We started one here in Danville several years ago, and it has grown into a greenhouse and nursery.
CLAW’s fundraiser a lot of fun
As I read the article in the Oct. 13 Daily Progress, “SARA still helping despite economy woes,” I thought about how much fun I had as the celebrity judge at the Charlottesville Lady Arm Wrestlers fundraiser for SARA.
Out of house and home ...
It’s a good Samaritan story for our times.
