Why all of this Sarah Palin vitrol?

Watching the news and reading recent letters to the editor in The Daily Progress, I don’t understand all the consternation and hate aimed at Sarah Palin.

Just the news that fits your worldview

My trust in the democratic process was rudely jolted a few days ago.

A simple question

So tell me, Jim Gilmore and Virgil Goode ...

Financial meltdown demands house cleaning

The events surrounding the economy of the United States are, and should be, of paramount concern to all of us.

No wonder Goode ducked

I am not surprised Rep. Virgil Goode, R-Rocky Mount, cancelled his televised debate with Tom Perriello, Democrat.

Over-regulation at fault in crisis

If you want the real story on the causes of our bailout, read David John Marotta’s column, “Crisis the results of centralized planning,” in The Daily Progress Sept. 29 Business Journal.

An emotional economy …

As we watch the ripples of greed spread through our national and world culture, we may find a lesson worth using if we are to avoid repeating this mistake ourselves.

Issues should drive voters

Focus on policies and principles, not just experience or distractions like race.

Hero is only real choice

One candidate served in the Navy as a field grade officer, flew 23 combat missions and acquitted himself heroically while being tortured in a communist POW camp for more than five years.

Improving train travel

It might be a relatively small financial victory, but it signals a new era in federal-state relations regarding transit.

Projects require proper planning

“Just winging it” appears to me to be very poor public policy in evaluating and approving development proffers.

Parental opinion on race in 5th

Our son, Tom Perriello, is running for U.S. Congress from the 5th District of Virginia.

Pelosi’s bailout speech ridiculous

I am writing to express my outrage over the needless political comments made by Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi prior to Congrress’ important first vote on the $700 billion economic legislation.

Obama putting his campaign first

I have seen many campaign ads on the local television stations that have been approved by Sen. Barack Obama. They have two things in common ...

Equal justice: Ongoing goal

More evidence of Charlottesville’s unique and admirable character was displayed last week at the 10th anniversary celebration for the local public defender office.

Agriculture proves worth

We might not be an agricultural society any longer, but agriculture has a powerful impact on the state’s economy.

Government involvement isn’t always socialism

A recent writer complained about socialism (“Economic failure socialism’s legacy,” The Daily Progress, Sept. 26) when his complaint was really directed at authoritarian communism.

Congress bet on the wrong horse

If Congress had set out to drive its miserable approval rating even lower, it couldn’t have come up with a better plan than its members’ posturing and bickering over blame for the near-seizing of the credit markets.

2008 election is of utmost importance

In my relatively short time in this world, I have lived through several important elections. But none is as vital to the conscience of America as this one.

Don’t repeat fiscal mistakes

We must examine the current economic meltdown to see how we got here and what to do to avoid the same errors.

Race is not the issue

It seems disingenuous to argue that Barack Obama is disadvantaged among those who vote because of racial preferences.

For good of the nation, vote for political civility

Politics has left a bitter taste, but I see a groundswell of candidates who are trying to instill a modicum of respect in the political process. I feel encouraged.

Road problem is alarming

We understand the difficulties.
But giving up on the Eastern Connector project would be a double blow to the community.

Attacks on Obama ignore facts

In response to a letter of Sept. 15, “Obama unqualified on all fronts” (The Daily Progress, Sept. 15): I agree with the author that there are radical differences between the candidates, and that voters should decide based on the truth.

Obama’s record shows the waste

Citizens Against Government Waste is a non-partisan group that identifies wasteful spending in our federal government and influences citizens and Congress to stop excessive spending before it is approved.

Adventures of an album

It was a winding trail back to Nevada — Nevada Smith, that is.

Third-party voices need to be heard in debates

On Sept. 26, Barack Obama and John McCain had the first of their debates, sponsored by the Commission on Presidential Debates. The CPD, according to its Web site, was established “to ensure that debates, as a permanent part of every general election, provide the best possible information to viewers and listeners.”

Leaders must look beyond their power

We live in a turbulent world where politicians make promises they can’t keep.

World hoping for Obama victory

My international responsibilities at the University of Virginia have me traveling overseas, where I often encounter negative opinions about America.
