FAIRFAX, Va. (AP) — The Fairfax County School Board has voted to wait before deciding whether to accept a sensitive staff report showing racial and ethnic disparities among students in the areas of moral character and ethical judgment.
The report prompted debate Thursday over possible biases in the data and its presentation. Board members asked to postpone a vote to give them more time to discuss it.
The report concluded, in part, that black and Hispanic students and special education students received lower marks in character education than white and Asian American students. The disparities were widest among third-graders, but narrowed for eighth-graders and were negligible for high school seniors.
