Undercover cop killed in Virginia Beach

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) — Two men face first-degree murder charges n the fatal shooting of a Virginia Beach police detective in a shopping center parking lot late Thursday.

Police identified the officer as 37-year-old Detective Michael Smith Phillips.

Virginia Beach police also charged 23-year-old Ted Vincent Carter and 26-year-old Marshall Demetrius Moyd on Friday with use of a firearm in commission of a felony and conspiracy to violate the drug conspiracy act.

Police spokesman Adam Bernstein says Phillips was working undercover when he was shot around 11:15 p.m. Thursday in the parking lot of the Green Run Shopping Center. The officer died at the scene.

Carter and Moyd, both of Virginia Beach, are being held without bond in the Virginia Beach Correctional Center.
