Kaine awards grants to homeless shelters

Gov. Timothy M. Kaine announced Tuesday that Virginia is awarding $8.7 million in grants to homeless and emergency shelters around the state.

Six organizations that run homeless shelters and a domestic violence shelter in the Charlottesville region received a total of $743,064.

The funds, administered by the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development, will go toward the shelters’ operating and program expenses.

The local recipients were the Greater Orange Community Development Corp., Monticello Area Community Action Agency, People and Congregations Engaged in Ministry, Region Ten Community Services Board, Salvation Army of Charlottesville, and Shelter for Help in Emergency.
