With turmoil swirling around Groh after the Cavaliers’ 1-3 start, fans are looking for reasons as to why the program is struggling in the coach’s eighth year on the job.

Last year was a good time to be Dave Borbely, in his second season as Virginia’s offensive line coach. From stem to stern, he had veteran linemen at every spot, including first-round NFL draft choice Branden Albert at guard. That was last year.

It wasn’t always this way. Rivals once cast envious eyes upon Kansas City’s offensive line.

On Saturday, with the No. 2 pick of the NFL draft, the St. Louis Rams selected former St.-Anne’s Belfield and University of Virginia star defensive end Chris Long, sending a roar through local eateries and the Foxfield Races.

In a way, Virginia’s football program will celebrate its 25th anniversary today. Every year since 1984, the Cavaliers have had at least one player selected in the NFL draft.

It was Albert’s escape from a different nickname that sums up the ever-improving storybook progression that will include a new chapter when his name is called Saturday in the first round of the NFL draft.
