The All-Jefferson District volleyball team clearly showed that Western Albemarle is still the dominant squad in the district, but it also showed that a series of young, talented players are beginning to emerge at the schools that have played second fiddle to the Warriors the last few years.

The Western Albemarle volleyball team continued its reign in the Jefferson District, capturing its seventh consecutive district tournament championship on Saturday at William Monroe High.

Using its stingy defense and a well-balanced ground game, the Lions romped past the Flucos 42-3.

With their undefeated district record on the line, Monticello’s defense rose to the occasion to force a turnover on downs.  Bicknell then chose to make it a two-possession game with 56 seconds remaining and secure the difficult 28-13 victory.

With the win, the Flucos avenged an earlier loss to the Dragons and the teams are now tied for second place in the Jefferson District behind unbeaten Western Albemarle.

Both Western Albemarle and Fluvanna County run the spread. The Warriors ran it to perfection on offense and defended it exceptionally well on defense to rout the homestanding Flucos 35-0 on Friday.

Fluvanna County took advantage of a strong running game and a few costly Charlottesville turnovers to take an early lead that would hold up to give the Flucos their first Jefferson District win of the season on Friday night.

Rogers’ confidence in his young squad paid off. His team survived the Flucos’ rally to win the second game before winning a tightly-contested third game to take the match 3-0 in what was nothing short of a hostile environment.

A big reason for Albemarle’s success in its 35-13 win over Western Albemarle was the play of senior quarterback Jeremy Robinson.

After absorbing Goochland’s Wing-T clinic in the first half, Fluvanna County threw one counterpunch — a 17-play, 72-yard, six-minute drive to open the second half. It was the last blow the Flucos landed as Goochland rolled to a 33-7 victory.

With Mandy Klein and Kayla Walker up front, the Flucos showed some major potential in their 3-0 victory at home against Madison County Tuesday night.

Covenant dodged a bullet in the last minute in its opener against visiting Atlantic Shores, as the Eagles held on to a 28-26 victory.

In doing so, Fluvanna coach Patrick Dieter piloted his team to a 14-4 overall record and a second-place finish in regular-season district play, and is The Daily Progress’ choice for the All-Central Virginia boys soccer coach of the year.

In her last at-bat as a member of the Fluvanna County softball team, Danielle Dike demonstrated what being a team player is all about. Trailing eventual Group AA champion Broad Run by seven runs, Flying Flucos coach Nick Ward gave Dike instructions about what to do if she saw a pitch inside.

In Sterling, Western Albemarle sophomore Joey Manilla made sure his team would get the most out of a trip to southwest Virginia next week.
